40 Quart PowerChill Hot/Cold Thermoelectric Cooler Take some cold drinks on your next road trip while leaving the ice at home with a Coleman 40 Quart PowerChill Thermoelectric Cooler. More than a cooler, but not quite a refrigerator, it cools up to 40 °F below the surrounding temperature without any ice. So if you use your cooler in an environment where the temperature is 70 °F, this cooler will maintain an internal temperature around 30 °F. You can use it like you would any other cooler except, instead of throwing ice inside, you simply plug in the 12V car power adapter. Then add your pre-chilled drinks and snacks. Your cooler will reach maximum coldness in about three hours (you can speed this up by adding Coleman ice substitutes) and stay cold as long as it's plugged in. Large enough to hold 44 cans, you'll have plenty of space for refreshments for the whole trip, and you can keep all your contents organized with the storage tray. It fits easily into almost any vehicle, especially since you can lay it down for use as a chest cooler or turn it upright to fit in narrower spaces. The door converts to open from the right or left sides to offer even more placement flexibility. No matter where you set it up or how far you travel, with this cooler, you can always be sure to have some cold refreshments on hand to keep you going during your adventure. I purchased this to take camping during extended trips. I have a Toyota Prius and by leaving the power on during the hottest parts of the day, this cooler was able to keep meat in the bottom frozen for over 5 days. I had a freezer pack that was on top that became liquid after 4 days and, by putting it in the bottom for a few hours, it became frozen again. I look forward to taking ice cream out into the forest! The only caveat is that I placed a basket in the bottom to provide airflow for the cold air to flow rather than freezing everything close to the fan/radiator assembly, which worked wonders. A fine purchase. My dad used this for OTR truck driving before they got so fancy as a fridge and never had a problem. I started working in the heat and forgot about it bought 2 other coolers that did alright but weren't cutting it. Came across this again and it made my job doable. I put a couple ice packs in as a safety measure and to put less strain on the motor and the ice packs are still frozen after 10+hrs in a car in NC heat. Stand it upright in the back passenger seat and can reach all my drinks and snacks on the go at red lights. It's huge have carried a gallon of drinking water and gallon of Gatorade and still had room for single waters and sandwich. Have left it run while car is off for solid 3hrs and car started right up. Use it for camping and grocery shopping as well can put my cold things in it and still run errands. I am definitely getting another one just for the versatility and functionality for someone who hates the heat but loves being outdoors lol.Bought as a gift for a truck driver. Works very well. Makes a funny noise every now and again but eventually stops. It’s nothing out of the ordinary. It runs constantly in the truck and keeps food and drinks cold which is a plus especially in the summer. I know many, many people who have this and they love it as well.Keeps my food cold on 4 day trips. Just keep in mind it works best when outside temperature is normal. This was going to be a replacement for an older one of the same model that worked fantastically for a few hard working years but this one is not working. The power source has been verified as working.Edit, returned for a replacement same thing, they wouldn’t let me do the return with replacement I had to phone customer service where the guy was nice but after 10 minutes on the phone he said make a separate return and order another one which I’m happy to say is working. It seems Coleman needs better qualities assurance people. I will change my rating to reflect the working one.The first one I got was broke, but the replacement worked just fine. It doesn’t get nearly as cold as I thought it would though. Don’t put ice cream in it!!Engineer here - These thermoelectric coolers work perfectly, AS LONG AS YOU KNOW A FEW IMPORTANT THINGS. Save yourself alot of money (and weight) and buy these over a compressor based unit if you're willing to follow some best practices.First - Prechill your cooler, and any food or drinks you may place in here for a few hours. Thermoelectrics are not great at removing heat quickly compared to compressor units, if you place a bunch of warm objects in here, you won't get the cooling you think you should. In order to pre-chill the unit, purchase the optional AC wall adaptor before you use it in your car.Second - This unit cools about 35-40 degrees F below AMBIENT temperature. If you place this in your trunk in the middle of the summer (where your trunk is 100+ degrees), this unit will only cool to 60F. If you bring an infrared thermometer with you, you can scope out placement for this unit and get the desired fridge (40F) or Freezer (10F) temps you're looking for. you also need to make sure the heat exchanger on the outside of the unit has some "breathing room". I've found in the summer time, that I can place it on my middle back seats, with the heat exchanger side sitting inbetween the driver and passenger front seats, and if I point my A/C vent directly at it, I can achieve temps as low as 15F inside the cooler. You can basically make small adjustments to your vents to raise or lower temps at that point (once again, having a cheap 15-20 dollar infrared thermometer makes this possible/easy).Third - Realize these units use about 3-4 more electricity than their equivalent compressor based counterparts. This means you can probably run one for about an hour or two off your car battery before it's dead, but that's it!!! If you plan on using something like this long term at home/office, or especially if you plan on using it off-grid a lot, you may be better off with a compressor based unit so you don't run out of/use too much electricity. This unit hooked up to the AC wall adaptor will pull 72 watts of power continuously, if you leave it running 24/7 at a standard rate of .12cents per kWh, it'll cost you 6 dollars a month to keep it plugged in. I only use this unit on trips where I'm in our car a lot.Alternatives - If you need something that uses less power for off-grid or long term use, and you don't mind the extra 10-15 lbs worth of weight, I recommend that you get a compressor based unit instead. They are pricey, but I did find a Massimo 50qt unit at costco for only 300 bucks (so only twice the price of this thing). Compressor based units also generally involve auto-shutoff battery saving features, and better temperature control that you don't need an infrared gun to monitor ;-).Bonus tip - Amazonbasics sells some Large rectangular ice packs that fit on the shelf mounts PERFECTLY. I purchased some of those to create a mini-freezer within this cooler. Worked great on a 12 hour long road trip. Frozen food only got up to 15F, and the refrigerated side stayed around 30-35F for the whole trip. Makes this unit quite versatile.Have fun!!I use this cooler in my semi-truck, it keeps my milk, water and soft drinks very cold, great cooler for the price. It cools fine, but the major drawback is that it runs constantly: Unlike an actual refridgerator, this one keeps running even after it's gotten cold enough. As such, you have to be very careful when/if leaving it hooked up to a car or RV battery, as it will drain a 100 amp hour battery to below 90% in about 3 hours (since it draws about 4 amps). Many batteries will shut down if they go below 80%, which will happen with 100 amp hour battery in about 6 hours with this unit. So, IF you buy this, I highly recommend getting a DC timer as well in order to be able to shut it on/off regularly to conserve battery rather than having it running continuously. This cooler is well worth the investment. I used it on 4 trips this summer for travel and camping.UPDATE; Now,, into the second season the cooling fan howls during the initial start up. Still cools Great once running quietly.!?I was unable to return the cooler to Amazon/UrbanInspirations ,,, as more than the 30 days had passed. I contacted Coleman and was told to check for dust in the fan (it was clean!) and to only run the cooler for a max of 6 hours at a time during use.Ultimately Coleman may warranty the fan even though I was 1 week over the warranty period Or I will be able to order a replacement fan from Coleman. My wife and I take a holiday each year. When it comes time we bring out the Coleman Iceless Plug-in Cooler for our travel snacks, and learn, each season, that it has quit operating, again. Occasionally it can be restored by changing out the rather expensive plug, but more recently the cooling module seems to be the failure point, and this cannot be repaired. The next step then is to reach in your pocket for another $100 or so to replace the whole thing, such a waste.
